Care Guide

We want your Women of the Well pieces to last as long as possible. Following the care instructions below will help keep your garments looking their best wash after wash.

General Care Tips

  • Always check the care label inside your garment before washing.
  • Turn garments inside out before washing to protect colours and prints.
  • Wash similar colours together to prevent colour transfer.
  • Avoid overloading your washing machine — garments need room to move.
  • Remove garments promptly after washing to prevent creasing.

Washing Guide by Fabric

Stain Removal Tips

  • Act quickly — treat stains as soon as possible before they set.
  • Blot (don't rub) the stain with a clean cloth to absorb excess liquid.
  • Use a gentle stain remover suitable for the fabric type.
  • Always test stain removers on a hidden area first.
  • Avoid hot water on stains as it can set them permanently.

Storage Tips

  • Store garments clean — dirt and oils can attract moths and cause fabric deterioration over time.
  • Fold knits and delicate fabrics rather than hanging to prevent stretching.
  • Use padded or wooden hangers for structured pieces like blazers and dresses.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.
  • Use breathable garment bags for special occasion pieces.

Common Care Symbols

Not sure what the symbols on your care label mean? Here's a quick reference:

  • 🪣 Tub with water — machine washable (number inside = max temperature in °C)
  • ✋ Hand in tub — hand wash only
  • ❌ Cross through tub — do not wash (dry clean only)
  • ⬜ Square with circle — tumble dry safe
  • 🌡️ Iron symbol — safe to iron (dots indicate heat level: 1 = low, 2 = medium, 3 = high)
  • ⭕ Circle — dry clean only

Mary Top and Mary Deng's journey began in South Sudan, carried them through refugee camps in Ethiopia, and eventually brought them home to Ballarat. As migrants in a new country, they quickly understood what it meant to feel unseen — to have skills, dreams, and so much to offer, yet struggle to find their place.

So they created their own.

Starting with a sewing machine in their garage, Mary and Mary began crafting something beautiful. Not just aprons and handmade treasures, but a space where women like them could thrive. Where heritage isn't hidden but celebrated. Where every stitch carries a story of resilience, hope, and the unshakeable belief that together, anything is possible.
